Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is your cancellation policy?
  2. If you need to cancel your test day or practice day appointment, we require at least 48 hours notice to allow us time to be able to put someone else in your place that is waiting for an earlier test day or practice day appointment. If 48 hours notice are not given, you will forfeit your deposit.
  3. How many hours am I required to put in before I will be allowed to take my CDL test?
  4.  The answer to that question is easy, because we are no a driving school, you are not required to put in any amount of hours. You can test when you feel you are ready. The only requirement for time is a minimum of 1 hour of road practice for any person looking to rent a truck with a manual transmission.
  5. If I don’t pass my test on the first time, can I retake the same day?
  6.  The answer to that question is YES, only if you ask the examiner and he/she allows it. Please keep in mind that some days they may not allow it due to being under staffed and/or booked solid with other appointments. CDL TRUCK RENTAL SERVICES, LLC has no control over this.
  7.  Is there a charge to retake my test on the same day if I don’t pass it on my first attempt?
  8. Absolutely not! We have already rolled the truck and driver out there for you (or any other client that may be testing that same day) and we will sit there as long as it takes for them to let you retake that same day. The only time there is an additional charge is if we have to roll the truck and driver out there another day.
  9. If I am just moving to Illinois from another state and already have my CDL from that state, do I still have to go through all the tests (PreTrip, Skills and Road Tests) to obtain my class "A" or class “B” CDL License in Illinois?
  10.  Unfortunately, that answer is, yes. You will have to surrender your out of state CDL after you have gone through all the tests in Illinois and obtained your license here.
  11. Do I have to give the DMV my license when I come in to take the written tests after just moving to Illinois?
  12. Not at all. You still need to have your hard license in your possession for you to be able to legally drive.
  13. What information do I have to bring with me to the DMV?
  14. You will need to bring your driver’s license, your hard copy of your permit and receipt that you were given when you passed the written tests as well as your birth certificate, social security card and a DOT Medical Card if you are going to be driving a commercial vehicle out of state (SEE DMV ID REQUIREMENTS). Note: if you have recently moved and have not changed your address with the DMV, you will need to bring two forms of mail (in your name) showing proof of new residence. Otherwise, they will not let you test.
  15. Even if I am enrolled in a CDL Truck Driving School, can I still rent your truck to take my tests in?
  16.  Yes, you can. There are some provisions mandated by the state of Illinois. If you are enrolled in a CDL Truck Driving School and have taken any test (Pre-Trip, Skills or Road Test) at the school location, you either have to finish at the school location or be willing to retake any portion of the test at the DMV - Even if you have already passed any of the tests. However, if you are enrolled in a CDL Truck Driving School and the school itself does all of its testing at DMV, then all you will have to take are the tests that you need in order to acquire your class "A" CDL License. At that point, all you will need to do is bring in a release letter from the driving school stating that you have requested to be released from their school and you will be finishing the testing process on your own and that you do not owe them any money.
  17. Does CDL Truck Rental Services take checks, money orders or credit cards?
  18.  Unfortunately, we do not. Here is the reason for this policy – if, for whatever reason, a client does not pass his/her test, we can’t take the risk that he/she would dispute the credit card charges or stop payment on the check or money order. It’s a business and we still need to protect our interests as well as look out for yours. That is why we are a cash only business and payment is due upon arrival of the rental equipment to the testing facility. At that point, we have upheld our end of the arrangement by supplying our clients with the equipment needed to take the CDL test. We thank you for your understanding on that matter.
  19. Do I need to bring a CDL driver with me when I practice or test?
  20. Not at all. The only person you need to bring is yourself. We will supply the driver for you. If you choose to bring someone with you, that is completely up to you. Some clients like to do that for additional support or just to have someone to go out and celebrate with immediately after they pass their test and acquire their class "A" CDL License.
  21. How do I schedule my test?
  22. Our office will schedule your appointment for you and let you know what the first available day that the West Chicago Testing Facility has available. If you look online and see that there is an earlier date available other than the one we have scheduled for you, please call us immediately to see if our rental test truck is available at that particular time. Keep in mind that just because the testing facility may have that time available, it does not mean that we do. If you are unable to keep your scheduled appointment, please give us a call or text at least 48 hours before to let us know.
  23. How many attempts am I allowed for each test?
  24. You are allowed 3 attempts for each test. Once you pass one, you do not have to retake that portion of the test again – even if you are not successful in passing the next part of the test. Once that test is done… it’s done – then you move on to the next one.
  25. How long does the whole test take from start to finish?
  26. On an average, the whole test will take you about 45min from start to finish. Once you make it past the Pre-Trip portion of the test, time just seems to fly by.
  27. What are CDL Truck Rental Service employees required to do during my practice?
  28. Per the Services page, they are their only to help keep track of the points that you may or may not have accumulated. We are not a CDL school we do NOT train anyone for the test, ALL Services provided is based on reviewing the information you already know and letting you know what you need to do to proceed to get your CDL at the DMV.
